Good health screening tests

Health screening packages are offered by many clinics.

A basic health screening check should include the following tests to detect common chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol and assess your cardiovascular risk:

  • Body Mass Index
  • Vision Test
  • Blood Pressure
  • Diabetes Screen
  • Full Lipid (Cholesterol) Profile

However most patients typically ask for additional tests to be included in such health screening packages to screen for different diseases. As such most clinics also offer health screening packages which may include full blood examination, stool and urine tests.

A typical comprehensive health screening package may include the following tests:

  • Kidney Function Test
  • Bone Study
  • Gout Study
  • Liver Function Test
  • Venereal Disease
  • Urine Microscopy
  • Electro Cardiogram [ECG]

Clinics often bundle into such comprehensive health screening checks to include tests to assess the endocrine system and the immune status of common conditions like Hepatitis A & B. These tests include:

  • Thyroid Function Screen
  • Hepatitis B Screening
  • Hepatitis A Screening

People who are concerned about other dreaded diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis and Cancers can also opt for additional tests such as:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis Screen
  • Tumour or Cancer Markers Screen
  • HIV Tests

Tumour or Cancer markers are tests done with the aim of detecting cancers early. Except for Pap smear which is scientifically proven and highly recommended, the rest of the tumour or cancer screening tests are non-specific and non-sensitive. These tumour or cancer markers often lead to false positive or false negative results. As such these tumour or cancer markers are generally not recommended by the health authorities.

Having a false positive result can lead to further unnecessary investigations and procedures and add to the suffering of the patients. Patients with false negative results may go away with the pre-conception that he or she is free from cancer when there is an occult tumour hiding somewhere which is not detected. Patients should consult their doctors before asking for such tests to be done.

The common Tumour or Cancer markers offered by clinics include the following:

  • Alpha Fetoprotein (AFP) – for detecting liver cancer
  • Cacinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) & Stool for Occult Blood –for detecting colon cancer
  • Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)- for detecting prostate cancer
  • CA19.9 for detecting pancreatic cancer
  • CA 125- for detecting ovarian cancer
  • Peptic Ulcer Disease (H.pylori Antibody ) for detecting infections by Helicobacter Pylori which can increase the risk of stomach cancer
  • EBV Serology for detecting nasopharyngeal cancer
  • Pap Smear –for detecting cancer of the cervix

Most health screening packages require patients to fast for 8 hours prior to the health screening appointment. No food and beverages (except plain water) is allowed to ensure accuracy in the cholesterol and glucose results. The entire health screening process may take up to 2-3 hours.
