Health Screening Guidelines

Health screening packages are clinical and laboratory investigations and tests performed to detect dreaded diseases such as cancers or hidden health problem early.

Health screenings are often conducted as a routine on a regular basis. Health screening is one form of preventive medicine practised by many doctors on patients who are not sick but are concerned about their health. These individuals are willing to pay for tests to make sure they are free from any occult diseases or hope to detect them early.

There are many types of health screening packages out there. Some hospital based doctors will advocate evidence based medicine and discourage routine health screening. There is really no universal consensus on which tests should be performed for health screening and how often they should be performed.

Almost every doctors and institutions have their own view about health screening tests. What we often see are common packages put together for convenience to make it easier for doctors to recommend to their patients. In addition, patients can also choose to add on other specific tests to these packages to meet their individual needs.

As a general guide most doctors do not advocate or recommend routine health screening for children other than simple tests to check the height, weight, blood pressure, hearing, vision and dental problems. The more comprehensive screening tests for children may include tests to check the spine, the skin for unusual moles or birth marks. Some doctors also throw in a few blood tests to detect diabetes, endocrine disorders and anaemia. Parents who are concerned may want their children to be screened for developmental disorders and test the child’s learning ability.

In general most paediatricians and doctors would recommend that children get dental checkups at least once a year and an initial visual acuity test by the age of 3.

For adults, the health screening packages can range from one that is very basic to check the height, weight, blood pressure and screen for common chronic conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol to one that is very sophisticated to include CT scan and MRI.

The frequency of the health screening tests to be performed depend on many factors such as the family history of the person, risk factors, type of tests and the results of the initial tests.

Getting the right kinds of preventive health screening tests at the right time and right interval is important.
